The technology scene

There is a growing buzz around Newcastle in relation to the adoption of technology, StartUps, IoT and Smart Cities.

The competition for IT and technology talent is fierce as more organisations are increasing their technology spend.

Continued investment in technology from local businesses is going to allow scalable businesses to be created in Newcastle and stay here – providing opportunities for the next generation – as well as opportunities locally for those currently doing the commute to Sydney on a daily basis.

I’m a big believer in supporting the community that supports you. In 2014 I co-founded #newystartups in a bid to bring together technology talent, gather inspiration from one another and help promote the technology culture around Newcastle.

The need for quality tech talent has grown substantially in the past three years.

For businesses, there is a definite shortage of qualified technology and digital talent. The Newcastle technology recruitment market would be defined as ‘candidate-short’ meaning employers should be pulling out all stops to attract and keep the best talent available.

For candidates, there are multiple motivators for moving to the area, including a lifestyle change, living closer to the beach and affordability of housing compared to major cities.
